Gain some grains

Posted on August 11, 2011

When disaster strikes, many of us want to help. A special few step forward to serve.

The United Nations will recognize the efforts of aid workers by celebrating World Humanitarian Day on August 19. These dedicated men and women risk everything to help others.

Being an aid worker is not in my near future. But, I will spare a few minutes each day this week to play Free Rice. It’s fun, and it helps feed people.

Free Rice is an online game that gives multiple-choice vocabulary questions. For each correct answer, sponsors donate 10 grains of rice to the World Food Programme. In just 5 minutes, I helped donate about 800 grains of rice, which will feed 2 people for a day.

The World Humanitarian Day website connects you Free Rice and other interactive games. It also provides options for you to help people in crisis, for example those affected by the Horn of Africa famine.
